MaggieMo http://www.maggiemo.com Most recent posts at MaggieMo posterous.com Mon, 14 Nov 2011 13:24:52 -0800 New direction http://www.maggiemo.com/new-direction http://www.maggiemo.com/new-direction I've always struggled with consistently posting on a regular basis, and the last few months were no exception.  I started working full-time in May, which was a big adjustment for not just me but for my family, too.  As any working parent would say, it became increasingly difficult to find the time for proper meal preparation, household duties, and spending time with my child, nevermind blogging.

My mind is always chattering.  If I'm not thinking about what I need to get done at work for the day, then I'm mentally jotting the list of things I need to get at the grocery store.  It was on my way to work the other day that I started to think about how my family now follows a new pattern, and even 6 months later, we're still making tweaks.  But our routine is starting to solidify enough that I have resumed some other activities which I put on hold as we adjusted to my "new" work schedule.  Of course this blog jumped to my mind.

Originally, I thought this would be a blog about all these (mobile) software development related.  Code snippets or anything interesting I'd come across.  Frustrations I'd meet in hunting down answers.  But I think there is enough of those out there, and I don't think I would be any different.  Besides, as much as I enjoy my line of work, I don't love it so much that I'd come home to blog about it.  Honestly, if I'm going to take the time to talk about something, I want it to be something I feel strongly (good or bad) about.  After talking to some friends of mine, it dawned on me that the thing I want to talk most about with my girlfriends is how I balance family, work, and my own interests.

So the new direction I hope to take with maggiemo is not about Margaret or about mobile development.  It's about Margaret being both a mom and a mobile/web developer and finding sanity between the two.

Wed, 02 Feb 2011 19:56:24 -0800 ABC reviews http://www.maggiemo.com/abc-reviews http://www.maggiemo.com/abc-reviews Back in November I announced that ABC. Look. Listen. Write., my first iphone/ipad app, was available in the app store, and I was ecstatic.  Then I started getting feedback, and I was even more thrilled with what I was hearing.  Both parents and kiddos were entertained!  Tangorang Labs had a small marketing blitz for it, and as a result, a few blogs published reviews:

Ohdeedoh

I've taken the suggestions to heart, and I have a couple of next steps planned for ABC, which I've had to put on the back burner due to current projects and time constraints.  I'll mention them when I discuss my "lessons learned" in developing the app.  Until then, take a look, and let me know what you think.

Tue, 01 Feb 2011 15:28:58 -0800 New Meetup is a big messup http://www.maggiemo.com/new-meetup-is-a-big-messup http://www.maggiemo.com/new-meetup-is-a-big-messup My running group uses Meetup, and while I'm not the head organizer, I am an "event organizer", which means squat now, thanks to Meetup's recent big change.  I'm not going to go in depth of all the changes and how they irritate me (and the group's head organizer), because I'm not alone.  Many people have blogged and written to Meetup about it, and I think Green Tech Girl articulates my frustrations well.  All I can say is that my initial reaction was horrible, but I recognized that sometimes change is good.  Until I started to use it more and tried to schedule a few events.  At that point, I was ready to throw my laptop across the room.  You remember when Microsoft changed Office and how everyone complained that they couldn't find anything?  I felt like this was worse; on top of not finding anything, Meetup had taken away key features I found userful.  After about three days with the new interface, the organizers of the group are already talking about moving to another site. If I had the time, I would even try to come up with my own solution to more precisely fit the group's needs.  I know; why reinvent the wheel?  But if the wheel is broken...

Wed, 17 Nov 2010 14:02:01 -0800 My first iphone/ipad app submission...success! http://www.maggiemo.com/my-first-iphoneipad-app-submissionsuccess http://www.maggiemo.com/my-first-iphoneipad-app-submissionsuccess
A few months back I teamed up with three talented individuals to form a new brand Tangorang Labs.  We are busily developing mobile apps for users of all ages, especially kids.  It's been a fantastic way to ease back into working while still having time with my kiddo.  I recently finished up ABC: Look. Listen. Write. which is a fun, whimsical app to teach kids their ABCs through illustrations, narration, and letter tracing.

It was my first iOS app, so there was a bit of a learning curve to get acquainted with a new environment (and distribution process), but it wasn't a big deal.  The challenge I had, which I anticipated on, was figuring out how to balance my time such that I wasn't half-assing anything.  Having my daughter in school two days a week really helps, but software development doesn't always play nice with schedules.  Bugs arise right when you need to shuffle your kid off to music class, or design requirements change *after* she already napped for the day.  It turns out, I was ok with working in the evenings and on weekends when I needed to, but I had trouble letting go of the need to always keep the house in order.  I just couldn't ignore the piles of dishes in the sink giving me the stink eye or the clean-but-unfolded laundry piling up in baskets in the basement.  It drove me crazy, and my poor husband took the brunt of my frustrations.  I really have to work on that next time.  I mean, if software is developed in cycles, then I guess my house will have to have it's own cycles, too, right?

And I have to say it. Wow, do I have a newfound respect for my mom, who worked full-time, cooked dinner almost every night, and always had time for me.  Ok, the house was never clean, but hey, you pick your battles.

A very fun way to learn the ABC's! Featuring 26 whimsical illustrations, letter tracing and full narration, this is the ultimate alphabet app. Coming soon to the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Sun, 18 Jul 2010 21:57:00 -0700 Your Software WishList http://www.maggiemo.com/your-software-wishlist http://www.maggiemo.com/your-software-wishlist

I'm a budding entrepreneuer and a freelance web developer.  I've developed software for startups, mostly on web and mobile applications (even before iPhones even existed!), and I've always enjoyed the innovation and creativity that can occur at in some environments.  While web and mobile technology seems to be moving at a blazing pace, I still hear people say how they can't find software that fits a certain need of theirs.  Sure, diminutive-creature-throwing Facebook apps and World of Warcraft-like games are fun, but it doesn't help people with their work needs or day-to-day tasks.  That's where I want to help.  I have general, abstract ideas of how I can provide software to help people in their jobs and lives, but nothing specific, nothing concrete.  In the past, I have failed to note these ideas and kicked myself for not remembering them, but now here is our chance!  If you could develop software (be it skill, time, desire, whatever) and create an app to make an aspect of your life easier, what would it be?   Tell me in the comments below.
